Experience Farm Life on a Small Organic Farm in Södermanland, Sweden

Have you ever dreamed of living and working on a small organic farm in the Swedish countryside? Just an hour south of Stockholm, our farm in Södermanland offers a unique opportunity to experience rural life, care for animals, grow vegetables, and immerse yourself in Swedish culture.

We are Peter, Hans, and our daughter Sophia, and we run this small, family-owned farm with a mix of vegetables and protected Swedish animal breeds. Our farm is home to goats, three horses, three small cows, chickens, a friendly Labrador named Bosse, and a few cats. While farming is a large hobby for us, we also maintain regular jobs to make ends meet. Volunteers help us during the busy high seasons, joining in daily and seasonal chores.

A Welcoming Environment for Volunteers
We are looking for socially skilled, motivated volunteers who can work independently when needed but also enjoy social interaction. While experience with horses is a plus, it is not required. Our ideal volunteer is someone interested in farming, willing to work, and ready to join our farm family for longer stays.

Stays at our farm offer the perfect balance of work, learning, and cultural exchange. In the evenings, we enjoy playing games, sharing meals, exchanging stories, and learning from one another’s cultures.

Types of Help and Learning Opportunities
Volunteers on our farm can expect to participate in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Daily routines in the stables: feeding animals, changing water, and general care
  • Greenhouse and vegetable field work: seeding, potting, re-potting, weeding, watering, and harvesting
  • Maintenance: cleaning, fixing fences, construction, carpentry, and general farm upkeep
  • Cooking and preparing family meals
  • Eco projects and sustainable farming practices

Seasonal work varies throughout the year. In early spring, we start seeds indoors under lights before transferring them to the greenhouse. During spring and summer, the focus is on weeding, planting, watering, and caring for the crops. July and August are the busiest months, with sowing, harvesting, and cleaning the stables in preparation for winter. Our vegetable crops include potatoes, corn, leek, onions, beans, beets, peas, cucumbers, pumpkins, tomatoes, and chili plants.

Cultural Exchange and Learning
Living on our farm provides more than just farm experience. We love hosting volunteers from around the world and value cultural exchange. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about organic and sustainable farming practices
  • Share recipes and cooking techniques
  • Participate in social activities and games with the family
  • Improve language skills, as we are fluent in English, Dutch, and Swedish, and have intermediate German knowledge

Accommodation and Amenities
Volunteers stay in a comfortable space near the barn, equipped with a bathroom, shower, and WiFi. You may have the accommodation to yourself or share it with another volunteer. All meals, sheets, and towels are provided. While we are not vegetarians, we are conscious of our food choices and sourcing. Please inform us in advance of any allergies or dietary restrictions.

Daily Routine
Our typical day is structured around a 5-hour working schedule, starting in the morning with stable routines and fieldwork. Breakfast is eaten individually after completing morning tasks, and dinner is a shared family experience where we plan the next day’s work. While we try to maintain routines, flexibility is key, as farm life can be unpredictable.

Exploring the Surroundings
In your free time, there is plenty to explore. The farm is surrounded by lakes, including the beautiful Lake Båven, perfect for a refreshing swim in summer. The nearby bus stop provides connections to Gnesta, Nyköping, and Stockholm, allowing for day trips and longer explorations. Weekends may include light chores around the farm, giving you the opportunity to relax and enjoy the Swedish countryside.

Additional Information

  • Limited internet access
  • Pets present on the farm
  • Smoking allowed in designated areas
  • Space for camper vans available
  • One volunteer accommodated at a time

Join Us!
If you are enthusiastic, eager to learn, and ready to experience life on a small organic farm in Sweden, we would love to hear from you. Come and help with daily chores, immerse yourself in farm life, and enjoy cultural exchange in the heart of Södermanland.
