About the Role
Are you a skilled and dependable operator looking for a hands-on, essential role in your community? Kitchener Public Works is seeking a Seasonal Urban Snow Removal Equipment Operator to join our team for the winter season. This is a critical position where you will be on the front lines, ensuring roads and sidewalks are safe and clear for our residents during winter weather events.
This role is classified as a Green Job, as your work directly contributes to public safety and efficient city operations, supporting positive environmental outcomes by maintaining clear and safe transportation routes.
Key Responsibilities
As a Snow Removal Equipment Operator, you will:
- Safely operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment, including:
- Snowploughs
- Sanding and Salt Trucks
- Snowblowers
- Snow Transportation Trucks
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections, checking, lubricating, refueling, and cleaning equipment.
- Spread sand and salt on roads and sidewalks for effective ice and snow control.
- Promptly report any equipment malfunctions or issues to your supervisor.
- Work collaboratively with a team to complete snow and ice clearing operations efficiently.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Environment:Â You will work in cold, refrigerated, noisy, and wet/damp conditions.
- Schedule:Â This role requires extreme flexibility. Shifts can be early morning, day, evening, night, weekends, and on-call. Overtime is required, especially during significant snow events.
- Physical Capabilities:Â The job involves a combination of sitting, standing, and walking. You must be able to handle weights of up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and work effectively under pressure with strong attention to detail.

Requirements & Qualifications
- Education:Â No formal degree, certificate, or diploma is required.
- Experience:Â Previous experience operating snow removal or similar heavy equipment is a strong asset.
- Licence:Â A valid driver’s licence is mandatory.
- Driving Skills:Â Must be able to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
- Security Checks:Â Must pass a Driver’s Validity Licence Check and a Driving Record Check (abstract).
- Transportation:Â Public transportation is not available to the work sites. You must have your own reliable transportation.

The Role
We are building a pool of on-call workers for the upcoming winter season to support our Highway Maintenance crews in the Fredericton District. As a Snowfighter and Operations Worker, you will be on the front lines, keeping our provincial highways safe during winter weather.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operating heavy equipment, including a one-person plow truck.
- Plowing snow and spreading sand/salt on roads.
- Performing general highway construction and maintenance tasks.
- Conducting basic maintenance and minor repairs on your assigned equipment.
- Maintaining accurate work records.
Work Environment
- You will be based out of one of various locations within the Fredericton District.
- This role requires flexibility to work holidays, weekends, shifts, and variable hours.
- You will work in all weather conditions to keep the roads clear and safe.
- We promote a scent-reduced environment for the health and safety of our staff.
What You Bring (Required Qualifications)
- Education & Experience:Â A minimum of a Grade 10 education, plus at least three (3) years of experience operating heavy construction equipment.
- Driver’s License:Â A valid New Brunswick Class 3 Driver’s License with an air brake endorsement.
- Language:Â Written and spoken English is required.
Note: An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
It’s a Plus If You Have (Asset Qualifications)
- Certification to operate a One-Person Plow.
